What’s the safest option?

You’re not alone-and in many cases, there are simpler solutions than you might expect.

Many Kids Don’t Need Deep Sedation

At Shelby Pediatric Dentistry, we often see children who were told elsewhere they might need sedation-but do great with a more gentle approach.

You Stay With Your Child

A major difference at our office:

Parents are invited to stay with their child during visits-including nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

Your presence helps your child feel:

  • Safer
  • Supported
  • More relaxed

Sedation Options for Children

We offer multiple levels of pediatric sedation dentistry, and we’ll help you choose what’s best for your child.

Most Common and Gentle

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

The most common and gentle option for sedation dentistry for kids.

  • Your child stays awake and relaxed
  • Wears off quickly after the visit
  • Parents can stay with their child
  • Works well for many children-even those who are nervous

👉 For many kids, this is all that’s needed

Mild to Moderate

Oral Sedation

A step up when additional relaxation is helpful.

  • Taken by mouth before treatment
  • Helps your child feel calm and sleepy
  • Most children remember little or nothing
  • Parents can stay with their child

General Anesthesia in Office

IV Sedation with a Medical Anesthesiologist

For children who need deeper support, we offer IV sedation with a medical anesthesiologist and nursing team.

  • Your child is fully asleep under general anesthesia
  • Continuous monitoring by an anesthesia team
  • Ideal for more extensive treatment
  • Ideal for higher anxiety
  • Ideal for completing multiple procedures efficiently

Note: Because your child is asleep under general anesthesia, parents are not able to stay in the treatment room during this option.

Hospital Outpatient Setting

General Anesthesia at Children's of Alabama

For certain cases, treatment is completed in a hospital outpatient setting.

  • Your child is fully asleep
  • Care is provided in a surgical environment
  • Parents are not allowed back during the procedure
