Your Child’s First Visit to Shelby Pediatric Dentistry
We are excited to meet you and your child. We want to be your child’s dental home—a place he or she can count on for a fun and effective dental visit, and a place you can receive helpful information about your child’s oral health.
How Can I Prepare My Child for the First Visit?
First, we think it is great you are bringing your child to a pediatric dentist. When preparing your child, it’s important to remember that parental anxiety about dental treatment can transfer to your child, so stay positive! Use general terms, and tell your child that the dentist keeps your teeth healthy and happy and that we will be gentle while “counting” and “tickling” the teeth. We use many different words and phrases such as “brush” instead of drill, or “wiggle” a tooth instead of yank or pull. And we don’t talk about needles or shots. We prefer to call it “sleepy juice.” Most children tolerate dental shots well and usually don’t even know they received an injection, especially when they are calm and relaxed.
You should schedule your child’s first visit by his or her first birthday or shortly after the first tooth erupts. We typically don’t see new patients after the age of 13 because they can often be seen by a family dentist without any issue, and the office is geared toward younger children with smaller chairs, instruments, etc.
We know that your schedule is busy, and therefore we reserve your appointment time especially for you. We strive to stay on schedule and minimize your waiting time, and we only deviate from our schedule in the event of dental emergencies that must be taken care of immediately. Should you find it necessary to reschedule, we require a 48-hour notice so that the time reserved for your child may be given to someone else. A $35 fee may be charged to your account if an appointment is broken without notice. Please call us if you are running late. If you are more than 10 minutes late, your child’s appointment may need to be rescheduled. If you miss two appointments without giving 48 hour notice, we will not be able to reschedule you in the office.
Visits for young children and for treatment such as fillings are best scheduled earlier in the day when children are fresh. Afternoon visits are usually reserved for preventive care such as cleanings and sealants.
As a mostly paperless office, we appreciate you using the links below to complete your child’s new patient forms before your appointment. This information goes directly into our software to save you time at your appointment and to prevent wasted paper. There is no need to print out the forms.

We know that it can be hard to find dental care that fits your budget. At Shelby Pediatric Dentistry, we strive to remove financial barriers so that our parents can afford to give their child access to exceptional dental care. We offer a variety of payment options to accommodate various budgets. We accept cash, checks, debit cards, and most major credit cards. We also accept flexible spending accounts and CareCredit℠. If treatment (fillings, etc.) is needed, your child’s treatment plan will include a breakdown of all costs before the treatment is started. Payment is expected at the time of treatment, and we ask for a deposit to reserve your child’s treatment visit at the time of scheduling.
Not only are we an insurance-friendly office, but we’ll also help you maximize your benefits even if we’re not currently on your list of preferred providers. It is our goal to help you receive your full insurance benefits. We will provide you with an estimate of what your specific plan will cover. You are responsible for the estimated patient portion by the time of your appointment. We will give your insurance company time to pay their portion. However, you will be responsible for any amount that is not paid by your plan.
Our knowledgeable team will file and track your claims electronically, follow up on claim delays, and help you understand your coverage. Call us about your plan!
